It's Not You, It's Me

"It's Not You, It's Me"
Todd Kerns
Standard breakup song, 'cept this guy would rather have the Bowie records over the Radiohead disc. Important advice for any couple on the break.

All about ME today

I'm the last guy who listens to lyrics in songs, but here's a couple that really say what I'm thinking. (They're also packed with essential riffage.)

New New Wave

"Rockets"
Simple Minds
Jim Kerr's vocals have a vapour-like quality to them and the guitar matches it in both the riff and the tone.

"The Devil"
Tears for Fears
A haunting track with an assortment of crazy crackles and weird sounds. The song is held together by the piano which never changes. The song grows and expands but it keeps returning down to the piano.

Feel Good Tunes

"O-o-h Child"
The Five Stairsteps
This is a prime example of good music making good people feel better. Rob from The Delete Bin called it “an unabashed anthem to optimism.” I can’t word it any better, so why try?

"Groove Me"
King Floyd
There aren't many lyrics on this track. It's got quite a few oohs, sock-it-to-mes and come-ons. It all works just right. Nothing fancy on this track at all. It just feels so good.

Water

"Rock Me on the Water"
Jackson Browne
Some beautiful Christian imagery served up in a '70s singer-songwriter motif.

"Northwest Passage"
Stan Rogers
A sea chanty to those who have given their lives in attempt to cross what was quite possibly the most daring naval route the world has ever known, the northwest passage.

Just Plain Cool

The first post!... so much pressure... OK, don't over-think it. Stick to the basics. Here are a few songs that are Just Plain Cool.

~

"Shot Down"
The Sonics
Super cool dirty tone all around... the fast hand-clapping in the verses just works so well.
If cool guys ever fast danced, it might be to this.

~

"Children of the Revolution"
T. Rex
Yes, everyone already knows T.Rex is cool. but this is a lesser-known track... super cool slow riff, super cool slap-back echo on the drums, big horns, big backup-singing babes... but what puts it over the top is that this guy can pull off the line "I drive a rolls royce cuz its good for my voice."

~

"The Mexican"
Babe Ruth
This one's hard to describe... how about: the musical equivalent of the prelude to a gunfight outside the cat-house in a Spaghetti Western?

and an "almost as cool" live version...

~

Well, I've set the bar nice and low... The only question now is: high jump or limbo contest?
